To say that being the only one that looks like you in environments that are not designed for you and do not accept you are a challenge is the ultimate understatement. And when you’re Black, Brown or somehow labeled in the ‘non-majority’ and a Woman, you can find yourself in a fight for your mental and physical health daily. It does not have to be this way.
This is my story of navigating the Ivy-League, corporate jungle, entrepreneurship as a Black woman from college through a more than 25-year career in engineering, health, information technology, and now as founder of multiple businesses. As a British-born, American-raised, Jamaican, I have the extra layer or navigating spaces that have been alternately welcoming, perplexed by, and hostile to the immigrant experience. I have been extremely fortunate during my journey to have found strong advocates, mentors, managers, and sponsors that have opened doors and windows I did not know existed; and friends and family who have kept me honest and sane along the way.
As you read this book, I hope you laugh, cry, and relate; but mostly learn from my experience as you navigate your own way.
